[INDONESIA
AND
SUDAN
TOOK THE LEAD]
MORE THAN 100,000 RALLY IN EGYPT AGAINST WAR:
Subtle Control by Regime
ASTUTE
HOSNI MUBARAK
LETS STEAM OUT: SUEZ CANAL
OPEN FOR
U.S.
Forces
The wily Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak
knows his people well. There
is a vast swelling up of anti-U.S., anti-war
feeling in Egypt. If not given
peaceful vent, support could well up for the
Gemaa Islamiyya (with thousands
of prisoners in Mubarak's torture chambers) and
the Muslim Brotherhood
(nearly a thousand political prsoners).
For weeks, Mubarak kept the demonstrations
bottled up through heavy
handed use of the security forces. Then on
February 28, the first massive
demonstration was permitted and more than 100,000
people gathered to condemn
U.S. policies and to oppose the war on
Iraq.
It
was a deeply emotional
display of support for Iraq.
The regime is now convinced that an even
bigger demonstration might
be required to let the steam out which is
building up against U.S. policies.
The government party itself might lead the next
demonstration!
In the meantime, Hosni Mubarak is
cooperating fully with the U.S. and
Israel.
[He is paid $2.8 BILLION each year by the
U.S. to control Egypt.]
WITHOUT A MURMER and without discussion, Mubarak
has permitted U.S. military
shipping to pass through the Suez canal on the
way to the Gulf.
