September 16: Picketing in Baltimore:
Protest against coming Execution of Troy Davis

On September 16, scores of activists, Black, White and Asian, gathered in Baltimore's downtown area, at Pratt and Sharp streets, to oppose the forthcoming execution of Troy Davis in Georgia. They were from Christian, anti-capitalist and Muslim groups. The protest was sponsored by All Peoples' Congress and supported by several Black churches and by Jamaat al-Muslimeen.

The main speakers were Rev. Cheatham, Rev. Witherspoon, Sharon Black and Kaukab Siddique. They were also interviewed by Bill Hughes, a veteran campaigner for human rights.

September 15: Duane Davis Acquitted:
Activists Showed Up in Good Numbers

The Significance
For those who are unaware, Duane Shorty Davis is a Baltimore-based community activist. He is very outspoken against racism, the school-to-prison pipeline, the prison-military-industrial complex, the death penalty, and many other issues of grave concern to the community. In accordance with the maxim "Think globally, act locally," Shorty took the issue of racism in the judicial system to the top government officials in Baltimore by gifting them with toilets placed outside of their offices as a symbol of protest. The message--that the receipients were defecating on Baltimore's Black and poor--was clear.
Relevance to Muslims
Liberal artistic license is extended to artists insulting the Prophet Muhammad via offensive cartoons; to filmmakers portraying the Virgin Mary as a prostitute; to Disney in its racist portrayal of Arabs and Native Americans; to the makers of "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes" producing film laden with racist overtones. But not Duane "Shorty" Davis. His artistic expression--indeed his First Amendment right to creatively criticize government officials and their policies--is under threat. He was on trial on terror charges beginning Tuesday, for no reason other than his placement of a decorated toilet outside of the office of a government official.

LAHORE, Sep. 16. Dr Aafia Siddiqui Day was observed all over the country on Friday on the appeal of the Jamaat e Islami chief, Syed Munawar Hasan.

Rallies were held in the federal and the provincial capitals besides major cities denouncing the US court verdict of 86 years prison term for Dr Aafia Siddiqui on terrorism charges and demanding her immediate release.
In the Punjab capital, hundreds of women and children held a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club to draw the world attention to the injustice done to Pakistan's respected daughter by the US court and demanding her release.
JI deputy Secretary General, Dr Farid Ahmed Piracha, while addressing the gathering, said that Dr Aafia was a daughter of Islam but the military dictator Pervez Musharraf, in a show of utter shamelessness, handed her over to the US for dollars. He deplored that the present rulers too were devoid of any sense of shame and honour and had taken no solid steps for Dr Aafia's release. However, he said, the Pakistani nation was fully awake and would continue its struggle for Dr Aafia's release.
In Islamabad, a seminar was held at Al-Falah Hall. Addressing the seminar, JI Secretary General, Liaqat Baloch said that the JI would continue its struggle till Dr Aafia's release. He said that the US, India and Israel were trying to destabilize Pakistan.
In Multan, a rally was held from Chowk Ghanta Ghar to Husain Agahi. The JI Punjab chief, Dr Syed Waseem Akhtar, led the rally. Rallies were also held at Peshawar, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Quetta.
In Karachi, a big rally was held from Empress Road to Regal chowk. The JI chief, Syed Munawar Hasan, Dr Aafia's sister, Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, and JI Karachi chief, Muhammad Husain Mehnati, led the rally.
Addressing the rally, Syed Munawar Hasan, said that the Pakistani rulers had sold out Dr Aafia Siddiqui to the US for dollars. He said according to reports, the US court kept waiting for a contact from Islamabad for Dr Aafia's release but it was in vain.
Syed Munawar Hasan said Dr Aafia had been jailed for 86 years only for pointing a gun on American soldiers, then why the Pakistani rulers and army had released Raymond Davis, the killer of three innocent citizens.
He said the Pakistani nation could have secured Dr Aafia's release long ago but for the shameless rulers who had shown total lack of courage and proved themselves total US slaves.
The JI chief said that thousands of Pakistan's daughters and sisters were proud of Dr Aafia and were willing to emulate her example.

Pakistan, all the way from the north to the south, along the Indus river, is stuck in the biggest disaster in its history.
Islamic activists are leading the way in relief work. Jamaate Islami is active in the relief work and has sent several caravans loaded with relief supplies to the stricken areas. A top JI leader Liaqat Baluch is leading one of the caravans.
However, the biggest relief input is coming from Jamat ad-dawa, an Islamic movement labelled by the US as a terrorist group linked to attacks on India. This group has more than a 1,000 workers in the flooded areas.

Thanks for your recent newsletter. I like your thoughts on "9/11, Why US Muslims having a collective guilt about it". I agree that having all kinds of memorial celebrations throughout the country is not something that Muslims need to participate in.

Although we can argue about the nature of 9/11 and its reality, the reasoning given in your article for not mourning 9/11 is unacceptable because Muslims have been mourning the Shahadat of Imam Husain since the year 60 Hijri; even many Sunnis such as those in Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and India. If you collect data on every Muharram from Islam countries especially Shia Muslim dominated countries and look at the countless traditions from Holy Prophet (s) in Shia and Sunni resources, you will know that fact. Or do you mean to disregard the Shia Muslims as something else? Do you think your emails are going to a few 'like-minded' readers only?

As far as Islam is concerned, we go by what Islam teaches, not by what people do. Sunnis too do things for which there is no Islamic basis.

Mourning rituals are adopted by people themselves just like different forms of dress to fulfill the human need but the purpose is the same. \Similarly mourning remains a human need In all parts of the world and you cannot brush it aside
By saying 'what people do' because if something is universally found then it is fitri and it does not need any textual evidence. Rather to disprove it you need abundant and authentic evidence and I have not seen any so far; you bring textual evidence to disprove the validity of mourning for ahle bayt who were the dearest to the prophet (s).
Ali (as) mourned Fatima (as), and the whole family did (at least according to Hadith sources of Shia Musliims). It is only natural and human beings let themselves grieve and if they don't it is not human. To this day the followers of Ahle Bayt (as) mourn the tragedies. Your knowledge seems to be inadequate and I invite you to read more.

Israel has destroyed 85% of Gaza's fishing: Strangulation of a People
PCHR Condemns Israeli Escalation against Fishermen in the Gaza Strip
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns ongoing Israeli attacks targeting Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip, and expresses grave concern regarding the escalation of these attacks in recent days. This escalation has resulted in the injury and arrest of a number of fishermen, and the confiscation of a number of fishing boats. Detained fishermen were questioned, pressured to provide security information and collaborate with Israeli forces, and subject to cruel and degrading treatment.
According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 06:15 on Sunday, 11 September 2011, two Israeli gunboats stationed opposite to al-Waha Resort, northwest of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, surrounded two Palestinian boats. There were eight fishermen, including two boys, on board the two boats. The gunboats opened fire on the two Palestinian boats. As a result, two fishermen were wounded by shrapnel. Israeli naval forces arrested the eight fishermen after forcing them to take their clothes off and jump into water, confiscated their boats and sailed to Ashdod Port in Israel. Hassan Khader Hassan Baker, 53; and his sons Khader, 29; Ja'far, 27; and Mohammed, 21; and 'Allam Naser Fadel Baker, 16, were on the first boat. Khalil Jawher Khalil Baker, 21; Mohammed Majed Fadel Baker, 19; and Mohammed Suheil Fadel Baker, 17 were on the second.
At approximately 18:00 on the same day, Israeli forces released 'Allam Naser Baker; Mohammed Majed Baker; and Mohammed Suheil Baker, who was wounded by shrapnel in the right thigh during his arrest. They were released via Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing. Approximately 3 hours later, Israeli forces released Hassan Khader Baker, who was wounded by shrapnel in his left hand during his arrest, and his sons Ja'far, Mohammed and Khader; Khalil Jawhar Baker via Beit Hanoun (Erez) after they were questioned regarding their work. In his testimony to PCHR, a released fisherman stated that Israeli forces blindfolded the fishermen when transporting them to Ashdod Port and handcuffed them all with iron chains. He added that after four hours of waiting under cruel conditions, they were subjected to questioning and that interrogators offered them money in order to collaborate with the Israeli Internal Security Service (Shin Bet).
At approximately 07:15, on 13 September 2011, Israeli gunboats sailing opposite to al-Sudaniya coast, west of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip, opened fire at Palestinian boats. The Palestinian fishermen were able to escape in great fear of being arrested or wounded.
The Israeli attacks against the Palestinian fishermen and their property have increased since the beginning of this year and there has been a dramatic rise in the number and form of attacks. Since the beginning of the year, PCHR has documented 61 attacks against fishermen at sea in the Gaza Strip. PCHR has also documented 38 cases of shooting, including five that resulted in injury to eight fishermen; five cases involving chasing fishermen that resulted in arrest of 18 fishermen; and 19 cases that led to the confiscation and damage to boats and fishing tools.
It should be noted that Israeli forces have imposed more restrictions on the work of fishermen in the Gaza Strip. Since 2000, fishermen have been prevented from exercising their right to sail and fish.. Israeli forces reduced the area of fishing from 20 nautical miles, which was agreed upon in the agreements signed between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, to six nautical miles in 2008. Israeli forces have continued to prevent fishermen from going beyond three nautical miles since 2009. Hence fishermen are prevented from reaching areas beyond that distance where fish are abundant. Sometimes, Israeli forces chase fishermen within three nautical miles. As a result, the Palestinian fishermen have lost 85% of their income because of limiting the fishing area.
In light of the above, PCHR:
  1. Condemns the recurrence of violations recently committed by the Israeli naval forces against the Palestinian fishermen. PCHR believes that these violations are committed in the context of the escalation of collective punishment policies against civilians, and they are part of fighting the civilians in their means of subsistence, a matter that is prohibited under the international humanitarian law and international human rights law;
  2. Calls upon Israeli forces to immediately stop the policy of chasing and arresting the Palestinian fishermen and to allow them to sail and fish freely;
  3. Calls upon Israeli forces to return the confiscated boats to their owners immediately and compensate them for the damage of trapping the boats for a long time or for any other damage that might have incurred to them;
  4. Calls for paying compensations to the victims of the Israeli violations for the physical and material damage caused to fishermen and their property;
  5. Calls upon the international community, including the United Nations and its agencies, to assume their legal and moral responsibility through immediate and urgent intervention to stop all the Israeli violations, including the ongoing naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip and deprival of fishermen of over 85% of their livelihood through limiting the fishing area to three nautical miles.

New Delhi: Probably at the same time when Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was urging the police forces to "honestly discharge their duties" and function within the democratic framework to "scrupulously respect and uphold" civil liberties, activists, who visited the riot affected area of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, were recounting how brutal the same police force could be.

"The victims said they felt total helplessness when they saw police joining Gujjars in shooting them. They saved their lives by running from the spot and jumping into the pond", member of the National Integration Council (NIC) Navaid Hamid recalled.

Navaid Hamid was part of the ANHAD fact finding team, which visited the place led by Shabnam Hashmi.

"One of the victims said he saw police and Gujjars firing at people in the mosque, killing most of them on the spot. They were also burning people," he added.

Members of the Gujjar and Meo communities clashed in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan Wednesday with a controversy over an Eidgah land. The clash soon took the form of gun firing between the two communities. The incident has so far killed seven people but the officials fear the toll may go further up. Police has also recovered some dead bodies from the well near a mosque in Gopalgarh where the violence took place.

A journalist who accompanied the fact finding team claims in his report that they saw two completely charred bodies in the well, located within the premise of the Eidgah mosque. There was nothing inside the mosque which was not broken. They found more than 6 spots on the floor and roof of the mosque which were bloodied.

According to the District Magistrate, Kumal Krishna, one survivor, who is also badly burnt and is hospitalized in Alwar, said that he was burnt by the rioting mob but he saved his life by jumping into the nearby pond.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan government last evening ordered a committee headed by senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer V.S. Singh to probe the incident.

"The committee will probe whether there was any negligence on the part of police and the administration, and whether they failed to assess the gravity of the situation," a senior administrative officer said.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also ordered a committee headed by senior leader Digambar Singh to probe the role of administration and the police.

The government has announced compensation of Rs.5 lakh each to the families of those killed.
