PAKISTAN in GRIP OF MORAL REVULSION & RETHINKING
Massive Support for Taliban but regime Serves U.S.
New Trend's representatives have just completed a two week visit
to
Pakistan's biggest cities: KARACHI and LAHORE. Extensive information
has been
collected on the situation in Pakistan which will be organized,
inshallah, to
be shared with New Trend's readers.
REVULSION and MORAL DILEMMA
The extent of support of the Taliban in Pakistan and the extent of
revulsion
for the U.S. bombing and the Pakistani government's work would be
unbelievable for people who watch U.S. media and live in the U.S.
The movement which started with the very conservative religious parties
has
reached every segment of Pakistani society.
Only a very narrow social sector is aligned with Musharraf. The
question
arises, why is the mass sense of revulsion not successful in changing
the
policies of the government? This analysis will be done as we present
our
information.
PAKISTANI MEDIA ALIVE AND WELL:
Numerous newspapers are published in the two cities our reps visited.
ALL OF
THEM OPPOSE the U.S. bombing. The general view is that the papers would
not
sell if they tried to trumpet the government's policies. Only the
extreme
secularist, English, westernized papers publish views copied from
American
media. Their circulation is insignificant.
WHAT THE PAKISTANIS SAY ABOUT THE "TERRORISTS":
According to Pakistani media, Osama, Al-Zawahiri and Mullah Omar
are
alive and well. They have become folk heroes and literature full of
praise
for them abounds at every sidewalk newspaper stand and even at airport
bookstores.
It would be difficult to find a Pakistani, other than a few
government
servants and people in the westernized enclaves, who buys the American
line
on these terrorists.
(To be continued, inshallah.)
