Government faces Setback in Persecution of Imam Jamil
Atlanta: Sis. Karima, Br. Bilal, Sis. Motisola and a whole crowd of
Muslims were in court [December 13] as Imam Jamil al-Amin was brought
in for a hearing in which the defense is calling for a new trial. Good
indications for the defense.
Earlier on December 6, the government suffered a setback and had to
drop the federal case it wanted to institute against the Imam of America,
Jamil al-Amin, who has spent his life fighting racism and oppression.
Imam Khalil Abdur Rahman writes from Greensboro, North Carolina:
"Alhamdulillah. At this time, the United States government is unable to
proceed any further in its continued harassment and persecution of Imam
Jamil and there was no December 9 trial proceeding.
The unravelling of the prosecution's case came in the form of its
inability to present credible evidence. Simply stated, the prosecution
has no
evidence. As the International Support Committee stated: "Federal and
local law enforcement authorities made the unsubstantiated claim that Imam
Jamil came out of a shed/shack and fired this rifle at US marshals when he
was apprehended back on March 20, 2000.
"The U.S. government was put into the position of having to place upon
the witness stand individual(s) who would have to make the characterizations
that Imam Jamil was chased into the woods by marshals (after firing at them)
and that there was 'an exchange of gunfire' that occurred between the Imam
and these marshals. This the government was unable to/refused to do....."
The judge got the prosecution out of this jam by dismissing the case
without prejudice.
