KERBALA NOT A SECTARIAN MOTIF BUT A SYMBOL OF
ISLAM'S
ESSENCE
"The greatest Jihad is to say the Word of Truth
to the Tyrant Ruler."
(Hadith)
This is Mohurram 10, 1424, the anniversary
of the martyrdom of Husain
at Kerbala. The beloved grandson of the Prophet
(pbuh) stood against the
tyranny of Yazeed in spite of overwhelming forces
gathered by Yazeed.
Unfortunately the great sacrifice of Husain
(r.a.) is clouded by
sectarian squabbling in some parts of the Muslim
world. Stylized mourning and
breastbeating have made the occasion anathema for
most Muslims.
Fortunately, the visionary poetry of Allama
Iqbal and the writings of Abu
Ala Maudoodi have made it abundantly clear that
Husain is not a sectarian
icon but a symbol of the central tradition of
Islam.
HUSAIN ibn ALI (Allah be pleased with both)
would not accept the tyranny
of Yazeed for the following reasons. [Note how
relevant these are to our own
times when yazeeds are sitting on the "thrones"
of Arabia,
Egypt,
Jordan, Tunisia, Kuwait, UAE,
Turkey
(disguised democracy) and many other lands.]
1. Hereditary rule.
2. Monarchy.
3. Tyranny.
4. Arrests without evidence and trial.
5. Secular rule where the
Qur'an
and Sunnah do not apply to the rulers.
6. Use of state treasury as if it is the ruler's
private fund.
7. Removal of Muslim ummah from the process of
decision making.
8. Restrictions on freedom of expression.
9. Tribe and group placed above TAQWA
(Allah-consciousness) as standard of
superiority.
10. Exploitation of women, using them as sources
of entertainment.
Hazrat Abu Huraira (r.a.) has reported that the
Prophet (pbuh) loved his
grandchildren. Those who killed his grandson
Husain have made themselves
accursed forever and ever.
