January 28: PRESIDENT
BUSH'S
SPEECH INDICATES WAR IS COMING REGARDLESS OF ALL EFFORTS AT PEACE:
New Trend's observers say that President
Bush's speech was an exercise
in propaganda and demonization prior to the
coming assault on Iraq.
The President BROUGHT NO EVIDENCE against Iraq
which would stand up to
investigation.
Instead he tried to LINK IRAQ to AL-QAIDA in a
rhetorical but unconvincing
manner.
The war plans appear to have been made more
than a year back. All that
Bush is looking for is an excuse. If there is no
excuse, he'll go in anyway.
Bush's circular logic runs like this: The
inspectors can't find anything, so
Saddam must be hiding it. We have the evidence.
WHAT THE
AMERICAN
PEOPLE SAY:
Immediately after the Bush speech, more than a
thousand Americans protested
against his plans in Washington, DC (in severe
cold weather) and marched to
the National Press Club to keep the
media
aware
of their feelings. [The media
ignored the protest with the HONORABLE EXCEPTION
OF PACIFICA RADIO which gave
live coverage to the protest.]
RALPH NADER and other dissidents assailed
the speech on PACIFICA
RADIO. One unusual point which came from Nader
was that Bush, in his speech,
condemned the YEMENI-origin citizens arrested in
Buffalo, New York, although
due process of law has not taken place. Bush thus
violated the rights of the
Yemeni-origin Muslims by condemning them as
terrorists.
REPORTS OF OTHER PROTESTS AGAINST THE BUSH SPEECH
ARE COMING IN FROM ALL OVER
THE COUNTRY. The most significant was a rush-hour
timed protest in New York
on January 29.
---------------------------------------
We are still receiving reports on earlier
protests against the planned
war. One march brought out several thousand
people in SAN RAFAEL, northern
California, a city of only 43,000. Among them was
New Trend's long time
columnist Dr. Edward Miller, 84 years old.
[That's the spirit Ed. We are
proud of you. What do you eat? –editor]
