New York State Governor Kathy Hochul had a press conference to introduce yet another bill that would exclude the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency from utilizing local law enforcement's resources and deputizing local police to aid and assist ICE in its efforts to round up immigrants. Governor Hochul accused ICE of rounding up immigrants of color only.
Nothing was stopping these actions earlier. At a recent Mayors' Conference, the Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, implored other mayors to take action to protect their citizens. State governors have more power to challenge the federal government's usage of state facilities for federal purposes. During her press conference, Gov. Hochul rhetorically asked, "My God, what has happened to this country? What has happened here?" She added, "We're taking steps today, we're standing up and saying who we are, but can we just remember, we're America?" Gov. Hochul then said that she felt compelled to add private homes to her proposal, which further lists places that will be protected from ICE entering them.
These actions could have been taken a year ago! Why all of this mobilization in government now? Could it be because ICE agents murdered two White Americans?
Certainly, before Trump's 2016 and current presidency, unarmed people of African descent, in need of medical help or just jogging, have been shot and killed by local law enforcement. The only political press conferences were those held to support local law enforcement.
However, the American people were mobilizing before ICE began murdering Americans. People started protesting when they were merely harassing immigrants. Because of the economic boycotts, including the stay-home protests, politicians have been forced to take actions that should have been taken months ago. What were they waiting for to happen?
American activism has been the catalyst in getting politicians to take some level of action, not necessarily the murders themselves.
But, just as we must recognize that munafiqoon states such as Jordan or Saudi Arabia condemning Israeli oppression in Palestine means nothing, we must beware that these political actions being taken are weak, as well. Bruce Blakeman, a Republican candidate running for governor of New York, has already said that he would veto such a law if elected. This proposal still has to be voted on by the NY Legislature.
America is highly regulated. Too much regulation is a symptom of oppression. There are too many laws because common sense based on Scripture or the Qur'an does not exist here. Steve Glover escaped prosecution for video voyeurism simply because there were no laws at the time (late 80s, early 90s) protecting people such as Susan Wilson, Glover's tenant, from putting secret cameras in her residence. Common sense says that it is still an invasion of privacy. A peeping tom is a peeping tom whether he uses his eyes directly or uses surveillance.
Proposing new laws is political theater. There are likely existing laws that prevent ICE from using local law enforcement facilities or deputizing local officers for its harassment projects. If not, there are probably more immediate measures that could be used, such as mobilizing people to boycott or working with mayors to instruct the local police not to participate in any ICE raids.
There are other measures politicians can take besides proposing new laws. Enacting laws takes a lot of time. This has been another episode of political theater.
